Description

Systematic position. The Atlantic pine aphid (Cinara atlantica) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with conifer trees, showing a strong preference for members of the Pinus genus, where it lives as a sap-sucking parasite.

Host plants. The insect predominantly targets various species of pine trees. The aphids typically colonize the bark of shoots, branches, and trunks, preferring younger trees or the tender parts of older specimens for their feeding activities.

Biology and life cycle. This species reproduces parthenogenetically during the growing season, resulting in multiple generations. The population increases rapidly in favorable conditions. The overwintering phase is spent as eggs, which are carefully deposited on the needles or bark, ensuring the survival of the species through the colder months.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding of these aphids causes significant stress to the host tree, leading to needle yellowing, stunted growth, and premature needle drop. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, severely weakening the health of the pine trees.
