Cedar aphid

The cedar aphid (Cinara cedri) is a prominent member of the family Aphididae, known for being a specialized pest of conifers. It belongs to the order Hemiptera and is widely recognized by entomologists as a significant threat to various species within the Cedrus genus, which are commonly grown for ornamental and reforestation purposes.

This pest primarily attacks the branches and twigs of cedar trees. By clustering on the bark and soft growth, the aphids extract essential sap, which is vital for the tree's physiological development. Their presence is often detected by the clusters of dark-colored insects and the subsequent sticky residue they leave behind.

The life history of Cinara cedri is typical of many aphids, involving a mix of asexual reproduction during the warmer months and overwintering as eggs laid on the bark. Throughout the spring and summer, multiple generations develop rapidly. The emergence of winged individuals during peak season facilitates the spread of the infestation to adjacent healthy trees.

The damage caused by this aphid is twofold. Firstly, direct sap feeding weakens the host tree, leading to stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage. Secondly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal layer coats the needles, obstructing sunlight and severely hindering the tree's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
