Description
Systematic position: The spruce bark aphid (Cinara costata) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized feeder known for colonizing various spruce species, often dwelling in bark crevices or near the base of branches.
Host plants: The primary host for this species is the spruce tree (Picea). While it can infest mature trees, young spruce seedlings or ornamental plantings are particularly susceptible to heavy infestations, which can stunt their growth and compromise their aesthetic quality.
Biology and life cycle: Cinara costata typically overwinters in the egg stage, which remains attached to the needles or bark throughout the cold season. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices. Throughout the summer, several generations are produced, allowing the population density to increase rapidly if conditions are favorable.
Damage and pest impact: Damage is primarily caused by phloem sap extraction. The aphids feed in clusters, causing localized stress to the tree. Additionally, the copious honeydew production leads to several negative secondary effects:
- Development of sooty mold on needles and branches.
- Premature needle drop and yellowing.
- Reduction in tree vigor and metabolic capacity.
- Increased attraction of ant colonies that guard the aphids.
Control measures: Effective management requires early detection before the population reaches critical levels. Use of systemic insecticides applied as a soil drench or foliage spray is highly effective. Promoting natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, as well as managing ant populations, are essential components of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy.
