Description

The cypress aphid (Cinara cupressi) is a significant sucking insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species that exclusively feeds on plants within the Cupressaceae family, causing severe physiological stress to host trees.

This pest primarily infests species of Cupressus, Chamaecyparis, Thuja, and Juniperus. It is particularly damaging to ornamental plantings, where the loss of aesthetic value is often compounded by the potential death of mature specimens if infestations are not controlled promptly.

The life cycle of Cinara cupressi typically involves overwintering as eggs on the needles or bark of the host plant. Hatching occurs in early spring, leading to several generations of parthenogenetic females. High reproduction rates allow populations to explode during favorable climatic conditions, particularly in spring and autumn.

Damage is characterized by chlorosis and browning of the foliage, usually starting from the inner canopy. The secretion of large amounts of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from reaching the needles, further inhibiting photosynthesis and weakening the overall health of the tree.
