Description
Systematic position. The larch aphid (Cinara laricicola) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialist pest that thrives on trees of the genus Larix, specifically targeting twigs and stems where it feeds on phloem sap.
Affected crops. The primary host is the larch (Larix). While mature forest trees can tolerate moderate infestations, nursery stock and young ornamental plantings are particularly susceptible to severe damage, leading to stunted growth and weakened immunity.
Biology and life cycle. The species exhibits a complex lifecycle typical of aphids, including overwintering as eggs attached to needles. In the spring, stem mothers hatch, initiating several parthenogenetic generations of wingless and winged adults. This high reproductive rate allows for rapid colonization of host plants during the warmer months.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. Aphids extract vital nutrients from the tree, causing chlorosis, needle drop, and deformation of young shoots. A major secondary effect is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus creates a dark coating on the needles, effectively blocking sunlight and reducing the tree's photosynthetic capacity.
Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:
- Regular monitoring of tree branches during the early spring and summer months.
- Preservation of natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and lacewings, which can significantly suppress aphid populations.
- Application of insecticidal soaps or systemic insecticides if population levels exceed thresholds.
- Dormant oil applications in late winter to target overwintering eggs and reduce the initial infestation source.
