Description

The Cinara longirostris is a specific species of conifer aphid belonging to the family Aphididae (order Hemiptera). It is recognized by its specialized, elongated rostrum (mouthpart), which allows the insect to reach deeper sap channels in the bark of its host trees compared to other species of the Cinara genus.

The primary hosts for this pest are various pine species, particularly Pinus sylvestris. These aphids prefer to colonize thin-barked branches and stems where they can feed efficiently. While individual damage might seem localized, massive infestations can lead to significant physiological stress for the host plant.

The life cycle of this aphid follows a typical pattern for the genus, involving a mix of asexual and sexual generations. Eggs are deposited on needles or within bark crevices during the autumn, serving as the overwintering stage. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch, and the population begins to expand rapidly through parthenogenesis.

Feeding by Cinara longirostris results in needle yellowing, wilting, and premature needle drop. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers needles and blocks essential sunlight, further hindering photosynthesis.
