Systematic position: The giant spruce aphid (Cinara nuda) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect that exclusively colonizes coniferous trees, predominantly focusing its life activity on various species within the Picea genus.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects spruce trees, including Norway spruce and other ornamental cultivars. It poses a significant threat to young saplings in tree nurseries, as well as mature trees in urban landscaping, where it can severely compromise the health and visual appeal of the plants.

Biology and life cycle: The aphid exhibits a complex life cycle characterized by multiple generations per season. Individuals form dense colonies along branches and twigs, drawing nutrients directly from the phloem. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, typically deposited near the base of needles or within the crevices of the bark, providing a starting point for spring infestations.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by the depletion of tree resources due to intensive sap feeding. Infested needles often show chlorosis, become stunted, and may drop prematurely. Furthermore, the aphids excrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi; this black coating blocks sunlight and impairs the tree's photosynthetic capability.

Control measures: Management of Cinara nuda requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Chemical control involves the application of systemic or contact insecticides during the active growth period. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is crucial for building resistance. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, also plays a key role in integrated pest management.
