Description
The spruce resin aphid (Cinara pruinosa) is a species of aphid in the family Aphididae, specialized in feeding on various conifer species. As a significant forest and nursery pest, it is known for its ability to form dense colonies on the bark of twigs and branches, often going unnoticed due to its cryptic color.
This insect primarily attacks spruce trees (Picea species), which serve as both hosts and breeding sites. The damage is particularly severe when infestations occur on young trees or ornamental conifers, where the feeding activity can lead to a significant loss of vitality and overall decline in plant health.
Regarding its biology, Cinara pruinosa follows a classic aphid life cycle. It overwinter in the egg stage on the surface of needles or bark. Once spring arrives, the eggs hatch into nymphs, which develop into wingless and winged females capable of rapid reproduction throughout the growing season.
The harm caused by this pest is twofold. Primarily, the direct sap-sucking stunts growth and leads to needle discoloration and shedding. Secondly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs the tree's ability to photosynthesize effectively, often resulting in secondary infections.
Effective management requires a proactive approach. Chemical control is often the most reliable method during peak infestation periods using systemic insecticides. Additionally, maintaining optimal tree health through proper watering and fertilization reduces susceptibility. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, can also help keep aphid populations below damaging levels.
