The white pine aphid (Cinara strobi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is widely recognized as a significant threat to pine tree health, specifically targeting the phloem sap of the host plants.

The primary host for this species is the Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus). The aphids typically cluster on the bark of twigs, branches, and the main stem of the tree. Due to their tendency to aggregate in large numbers, they can extract substantial quantities of nutrients, which directly impacts the tree's vigor and development.

The biological cycle of Cinara strobi involves overwintering as eggs attached to the needles or bark. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and initiate multiple generations. These insects are prolific breeders, and during favorable weather conditions, their populations can expand rapidly, covering large portions of the tree canopy.

The damage caused by this aphid is twofold. First, direct sap removal leads to yellowing needles, stunted shoot growth, and twig dieback. Second, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a black coating over the needles, interfering with photosynthesis and aesthetic value of the trees.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Early detection via visual inspection of the bark and checking for ant activity (which often protects aphids) is crucial. When infestations reach economic thresholds, application of systemic insecticides is the most reliable method to reduce aphid numbers and prevent tree decline.
