Description
Circulifer is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These small, mobile pests are significant threats to agricultural stability, primarily because they act as efficient vectors for various plant viruses that cause severe damage to commercial crop production worldwide.
The host range of Circulifer is diverse, affecting numerous high-value crops. Key targets include sugar beets, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various cucurbits. These insects are particularly attracted to succulent tissues, where they feed and transmit pathogens, turning healthy fields into sources of viral infection.
The biology of the pest is closely linked to climatic conditions, favoring warm and arid environments. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. They typically overwinter in protected areas or on weed hosts, emerging in the spring to colonize new plantings. Rapid population growth during the peak summer months often coincides with the most sensitive growth stages of the crops.
The damage caused by Circulifer is twofold. Direct feeding damage results in leaf curling, stunting, and reduced photosynthetic capacity. Indirect damage, however, is much more critical: the transmission of viruses, such as the Beet Curly Top Virus (BCTV). Infected plants often show severe chlorosis and structural deformation, leading to total yield loss in sensitive varieties.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include:

- Implementing effective weed control to remove overwintering sites;
- Applying systemic insecticides during periods of peak migration;
- Utilizing resistant cultivars that can withstand viral infection.
