Systematic position: The beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized globally as a significant agricultural pest, particularly due to its efficiency in transmitting various plant viruses in arid and semi-arid environments.

Host range: This insect is a highly polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. Primary crops affected include sugar beets, table beets, tomatoes, beans, melons, peppers, and spinach. It thrives on various weed species, which often serve as overwintering sites and reservoirs for the pathogens it transmits.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Circulifer tenellus progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Hot and dry weather conditions are ideal for its development and dispersal. Adults usually overwinter in weed patches and migrate to cultivated fields during the spring, where they begin feeding and reproducing rapidly, often over multiple generations per season.

Damage and economic importance: While the feeding damage can cause some wilting and stunting, the primary economic damage is caused by the transmission of the Beet curly top virus (BCTV). Plants infected with this virus exhibit severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and yellowing, often leading to total crop failure if the infection occurs early in the growing season.
