African civet

The African civet (Civettictis civetta) belongs to the order Carnivora and the family Viverridae. Despite being classified biologically as a carnivore, this mammal is increasingly recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its opportunistic omnivorous feeding habits, which frequently lead it to raid crop fields in search of nutrients.

Crops most frequently damaged by the African civet include maize, sorghum, millet, and various types of tubers like cassava. The animal is especially problematic during the harvest season, as it consumes ripened fruits and grains, often causing extensive damage through both ingestion and the trampling of stems and stalks across agricultural plots.
