Spittlebug (Clastoptera)

The genus Clastoptera belongs to the family Clastopteridae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are commonly referred to as spittlebugs or froghoppers. They are notorious for the distinctive frothy, soap-like masses produced by nymphs, which provide protection from predators and desiccation while they feed on the host plant's xylem fluid.

These pests affect a wide range of host plants, particularly woody species and small fruit crops. Notable examples include Clastoptera proteus, which impacts blueberry and cranberry crops, and Clastoptera obtusa, which is frequently found on alder, hickory, and various deciduous trees. They prefer succulent, young growth for their feeding activities.

The life cycle typically includes the egg stage, which overwinters in the plant tissue, followed by several nymphal instars. After hatching, the nymphs quickly begin producing the spittle mass. Adults are mobile, winged insects that do not produce spittle but are also capable of causing damage by piercing the plant epidermis to feed on sap.

Damage caused by Clastoptera is primarily due to the extraction of nutrients and water from the plant. This leads to symptoms such as stunted leaf growth, terminal dieback, and reduced overall plant vigor. In fruit production, heavy infestations can result in significant yield losses and reduced fruit quality due to the physiological stress imposed on the crop.
