Clastoptera achatina, commonly known as a type of spittlebug, is a member of the family Clastopteridae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-documented for the unique behavior of their nymphs, which produce protective frothy masses, often called "cuckoo spit," to conceal themselves while feeding on host plants.
The host range of this pest primarily includes various deciduous trees and shrubs, with a noted preference for species within the Rosaceae family, such as apples, cherries, and hawthorns. By utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts, these insects extract nutrients from the phloem, causing stress to the plant's vascular system.
The life cycle begins with overwintering eggs deposited under the bark or in crevices of the host plant. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs immediately begin to feed and form the characteristic foam structures. As they molt through several instar stages, their presence becomes more pronounced, eventually culminating in the emergence of winged adults that disperse to seek mates and continue the cycle.
Damage caused by Clastoptera achatina involves the deformation of foliage, stunted growth of twigs, and general loss of plant vigor. If infestations are severe, the constant depletion of plant fluids leads to premature leaf drop and increased susceptibility to secondary infections, such as fungi or bacteria, which can compromise the overall health of the tree.
