Description
The Clastoptera biguttata, commonly known as the two-spotted spittlebug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Clastopteridae. It is a sap-sucking insect characterized by the distinctive frothy masses that nymphs produce to protect themselves from predators and desiccation.
This pest primarily attacks woody plants and trees. Hosts frequently include alder, birch, and various ornamental shrub species. By feeding on the phloem of young branches and leaves, the insect drains vital nutrients, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants throughout the growing season.
Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the species overwinters as eggs deposited in bark crevices or near buds. Once temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and start constructing their characteristic spittle houses. The development progresses through several nymphal stages, culminating in the adult phase by mid-summer.
The damage caused by the two-spotted spittlebug includes leaf curling, stunted growth of shoots, and yellowing foliage. In cases of high infestation, the constant removal of plant sap weakens the tree significantly. Furthermore, the buildup of spittle residue on leaves can encourage the growth of sooty mold, adding secondary aesthetic and health issues to the plant.
Integrated pest management strategies are recommended for control. Physical removal of affected twigs and small branches can be effective for low populations. For more severe infestations, the application of systemic insecticides is necessary to target nymphs hidden beneath the protective foam. Maintaining tree vigor through proper hydration and soil management also helps plants withstand and recover from light attacks.
