Description
Taxonomic classification. The willow spittlebug (Clastoptera proteus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Clastopteridae. It is widely recognized for the defensive foamy mass that nymphs produce, which covers them while they feed on the host plant's xylem sap.
Host plants. The primary host plants for this pest are species of the genus Salix (willows). While less common, the insect may also be found on dogwood (Cornus). The nymphs and adults typically colonize young, succulent shoots and leaves, which are the most accessible sources of nutrients.
Biology and life cycle. Clastoptera proteus undergoes a life cycle consisting of eggs, nymphs, and adults. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, which is deposited within the bark of young twigs. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin forming the characteristic spittle mass. They progress through several nymphal instars before molting into winged adults.
Damage and economic impact. As a sap-sucking pest, the willow spittlebug extracts essential fluids from the plant, causing significant stress. Typical damage includes stunted growth of shoots, leaf curling, and overall wilting. In nurseries and ornamental landscapes, heavy infestations can severely reduce the aesthetic and commercial value of the trees.
Control measures. Management of the willow spittlebug requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:
- Pruning and destroying infested twigs during the early season.
- Promoting healthy plant growth to improve natural resistance.
