Alder spittlebug

Systematic position: Clastoptera saintcyri, commonly referred to as the alder spittlebug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Clastopteridae. It is a distinct species of sap-sucking insects that is widely recognized for its unique larval behavior and specialized feeding habits on deciduous trees.

Host plants: As the common name suggests, the primary hosts are members of the Alnus (alder) genus. However, this pest can also be found on a variety of other hardwood tree species and ornamental shrubs. When infestation levels are high, nurseries face significant economic losses as young seedlings become stressed and lose their marketability.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins with eggs being laid in the bark of host plants, where they overwinter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and start producing the characteristic spittle masses (foam). This foam is composed of the insect's own excreta and glandular secretions, acting as a vital shield against environmental extremes and predators throughout the nymphal development stages.

Damage and harmfulness: The feeding activity of both nymphs and adults causes significant stress to the host plant. By piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, they induce physiological changes, including leaf yellowing, stunting, and curling. Furthermore, the secretion of the spittle can sometimes lead to secondary fungal growth, which further degrades the appearance and health of the affected plant.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for managing Clastoptera saintcyri. Cultural practices, such as removing infested plant materials during the early stages of infestation, are highly effective. For chemical control, systemic insecticides are generally recommended when populations reach damaging thresholds. Preserving natural biological control agents, such as spiders and predatory wasps, is also essential for maintaining long-term population stability.
