Clastoptera undulata, often classified within the spittlebug family (Clastopteridae), represents a group of insects known for the distinctive frothy spittle mass produced by their nymphs. This insect is recognized as a significant pest that affects various host plants, utilizing its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract vital sap directly from the plant's vascular tissues.
The damage caused by these insects is primarily seen on woody shrubs and trees. By concentrating on young, succulent shoots and leaves, the feeding activity restricts the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water effectively. This leads to reduced vigor and stunted growth, which can be particularly damaging for young orchard trees or nursery stock.
Regarding their life cycle, Clastoptera undulata typically undergoes a process of incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in protected crevices within the plant bark, where they overwinter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and immediately begin feeding, constructing the characteristic protective foam. The adult stage, characterized by its jumping ability, is mobile and disperses throughout the vegetation to mate.
