Sunflower spittlebug

Systematic position. The sunflower spittlebug (Clastoptera xanthocephala) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Clastopteridae family. Native to North and Central America, this insect is recognized as a significant pest that affects a variety of agricultural and ornamental plants.

Host plants and damage. The pest has a wide host range, including sunflowers, chrysanthemums, and various ornamental asters. By feeding on the plant phloem and xylem, the spittlebug causes stunting, leaf distortion, and wilting. Persistent feeding can lead to severe loss of vigor and significantly reduced aesthetic value in floral crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises eggs, nymphs, and adults. Nymphs are particularly noted for producing a protective, frothy mass made of excrement and glandular secretions. This "spittle" provides essential protection against desiccation and natural predators, allowing nymphs to feed undisturbed on the stems and leaf axils.

Economic impact. The spittle production is the most visible sign of infestation. Beyond direct nutrient loss, the presence of the foam on stems and buds is detrimental to the marketability of flowers. Large populations can weaken the host plant, making it more susceptible to secondary environmental stresses and various pathogens.

Control measures. Controlling Clastoptera xanthocephala requires a proactive approach.
