Taxonomic position: The Cattleya gall midge (Clinodiplosis cattleyae) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a minute, specialized pest known primarily for its impact on orchids, specifically within the genus Cattleya, where it causes localized plant tissue deformations.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets orchids of the Cattleya alliance. In specialized collections, greenhouses, and orchid nurseries, it can become a persistent problem, as the warm and humid conditions required for orchids often overlap with the optimal environmental conditions for the midge.

Biology and life cycle: The midge completes its life cycle within the plant tissue. Adults are tiny, fragile flies that deposit their eggs into the developing tips of new shoots or inside unopened flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the plant tissues, which causes the host plant to form a gall—a tumor-like swelling that protects the larvae during their growth and pupation.

Damage and severity: The most characteristic sign of infestation is the appearance of peculiar, distorted swellings on new growth or buds. As the larvae feed, they disrupt the normal transport of nutrients, which leads to the cessation of growth, potential tissue death, and the failure of flower buds to mature or open properly, significantly reducing the aesthetic value of the orchid.

Protection measures: Managing this pest is challenging due to the larvae's cryptic lifestyle within the plant tissues. Suggested control practices include:
