Coccophagus capensis

Coccophagus capensis is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Aphelinidae within the order Hymenoptera. It is recognized in agricultural entomology primarily as a specialist parasitoid that targets scale insects. Its geographic distribution is mostly restricted to regions where its specific hosts thrive, particularly in tropical and subtropical orchard ecosystems.

The primary hosts of this species include various Coccidae species. These pests are known for infesting citrus trees and ornamental foliage, causing significant sap loss and secondary fungal infections due to honeydew secretion. Coccophagus capensis plays an essential role in keeping these scale populations under natural check in healthy, balanced orchard environments.

The biological cycle is highly specialized: the female wasp deposits an egg beneath the protective shield of a living scale insect. Upon hatching, the larva feeds internally on the host's body tissues. This process eventually leads to the death of the host, after which the adult wasp emerges, leaving behind a characteristic exit hole in the scale cover.

While often viewed as a beneficial insect, its economic significance must be interpreted within the context of IPM (Integrated Pest Management). While it suppresses scale numbers, it is sensitive to environmental stressors. Its presence is an indicator of a successful, low-chemical input management strategy, as broad-spectrum insecticides are detrimental to its survival.

Protection measures for the orchard ecosystem should focus on conserving native parasitoid populations. The following strategies are recommended for maintaining balance:
