Cochlodina is a genus of land snails belonging to the family Clausiliidae, characterized by their elongated, turret-shaped shells. While these gastropods are primarily detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter, leaf litter, and fungi, they can occasionally act as opportunistic pests. Under favorable environmental conditions, they may feed on soft plant tissues, causing distress to various garden plants and nursery crops.

The host range for these snails includes ornamental flowers, vegetable seedlings, strawberries, and young tree shoots. They are particularly attracted to environments with high moisture levels and dense foliage, which provide the necessary humidity and protection from desiccation. Greenhouses and shaded garden beds often provide an ideal habitat for these mollusks to thrive and multiply.

The biology of Cochlodina is inherently linked to humidity. They reproduce by laying eggs in moist soil or damp crevices. The life cycle allows for multiple generations if the climate remains temperate and moist. Their ability to remain inactive during dry periods, buried deep in the soil or under wood, makes them resilient and difficult to eradicate once they have established a significant population.

Damage caused by these snails typically manifests as irregular holes in leaves, grazing on soft stems, and scarring of new growth. These injuries do not just stunt the plant but also create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria, leading to further decay. Identifying the presence of these snails is usually based on the appearance of mucus trails and their characteristic feeding patterns on the undersides of leaves.

Management strategies focus on reducing humidity and creating physical barriers to protect plants. Key control measures include:

• Removing organic debris and mulch layers where snails seek shelter.
• Applying physical barriers such as crushed eggshells, coarse sand, or copper tape.
• Hand-picking individuals during early morning or late evening hours.
• Using bait stations with ferric phosphate, which is safe for pets and wildlife.
• Improving site drainage to eliminate the damp conditions that favor the snails.
