Coelinius ferruginea is a specialized pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. While most members of this family are known as parasitoids, this species exhibits phytophagous behavior, causing significant damage to various cereal crops and threatening agricultural productivity in affected regions.

The pest primarily targets small grain cereals, including winter and spring wheat, barley, and rye. It prefers crops that are in the stage of active stem development, as the succulent tissues provide the necessary conditions for the successful development of the larvae once they hatch inside the plant stalk.

The biology and lifecycle of this insect are tightly synchronized with the phenology of cereal crops. Adult females oviposit directly into the stem tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stem, feeding on internal tissues, which eventually disrupts the vascular system of the host plant. The pupation phase typically occurs within the stalk, ensuring protection during the development of the adult form.

Damage caused by the larvae manifests as yellowing, stunted growth, and premature wilting of the stems. In many cases, the affected stalks fail to produce a fully developed ear, leading to significant yield losses. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the stem is compromised, increasing the risk of lodging before harvest.
