Coeloides anastrephae

Systematic classification. Coeloides anastrephae is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Braconidae family. These insects are small parasitic wasps known for their specialized behavior in targeting larvae of specific fruit flies. Their ecological niche is primarily defined by the availability of hosts within infested fruit tissues.

Targeted host range. The primary hosts for Coeloides anastrephae are larvae of the genus Anastrepha, which are major pests of various fruits. This includes tropical and subtropical crops such as mango, guava, citrus, and various stone fruits. Because the host larvae feed inside the fruit, they often remain protected from external predators, making the role of endoparasitoids significant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when the female wasp detects a host larva inside a fruit or under the bark. Using its long ovipositor, the wasp drills into the tissue to inject an egg into or near the host. The wasp larva then hatches and consumes the host internally. Once the development is complete, it pupates and emerges as an adult, completing the cycle in a matter of weeks depending on environmental conditions.

Nature of damage and significance. The damage is characterized by the potential reduction in the efficacy of biological control programs. Because Coeloides anastrephae can occasionally act as a hyperparasitoid, it might negatively impact other beneficial wasps that serve as primary regulators of fruit fly populations. This disruption in the natural food chain can lead to outbreaks of the fruit flies themselves, thereby increasing crop losses.

Control measures. To manage this species in an orchard environment, focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

• Regular sampling of infested fruits to monitor parasitism rates;
• Avoidance of broad-spectrum chemical insecticides that kill both pests and their natural enemies;
• Cultivation of biodiversity buffers to support healthy populations of parasitoid complexes;
• Implementation of quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infested fruit to new areas.
