Description
Coeloides pissodis is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Braconidae (order Hymenoptera). This insect is recognized in forestry as an important natural enemy, specifically a parasitoid, that regulates populations of bark-boring insects, particularly the Pissodes weevil genus.
The primary hosts affected by this parasitoid are larvae of various weevils that infest coniferous trees, such as pine (Pinus) and spruce (Picea). By targeting these larvae, the wasp prevents the host population from reaching damaging levels that could otherwise kill younger or stressed trees.
The life cycle is specialized and highly efficient. The female adult wasp uses her long ovipositor to detect and penetrate the bark of coniferous trees.
