Kelp fly

The kelp fly (Coelopa) is a genus of flies commonly known for inhabiting coastal zones near piles of decomposing seaweed. While not considered a primary threat to traditional inland crops, they represent a significant nuisance and biological concern for coastal agricultural facilities and regions that utilize marine resources for fertilization.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Diptera and the family Coelopidae. These insects are highly adapted to the intertidal environment, playing a role as decomposers, although their high population densities often cause them to be classified as pests in localized areas where human activity and agriculture intersect with the shoreline.

The biological cycle of the kelp fly is tightly linked to the availability of decaying organic matter. Females lay eggs directly onto rotting seaweed. The larvae progress through three instars before pupation. The duration of this cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and the moisture levels within the decomposing seaweed piles, allowing for multiple generations during the warm season.

The damage caused by Coelopa is primarily ecological and secondary-agricultural. High concentrations of larvae accelerate the breakdown of organic matter, which can attract other pests and pathogens to nearby agricultural crops. Furthermore, the swarming behavior of adult flies creates significant logistical hurdles for farmers working on coastal fields or handling organic waste products.

Effective management strategies for controlling kelp fly populations include:
