Description
Systematic position. The Chestnut Heath (Coenonympha glycerion) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. While often observed as a field butterfly, its larval stage can act as a pest, feeding on the foliage of various grasses and cereals, occasionally reaching density levels that require agricultural intervention.
Crops affected. The primary hosts for the larvae are various species of the Poaceae family. This includes wild grasses, pasture cover, and cultivated cereal crops. In agricultural settings, they are of particular concern in areas where cereal fields are adjacent to natural meadow habitats, facilitating the movement of the pest.
Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge during the summer months, mating and laying eggs on host plants. Larvae are nocturnal or crepuscular feeders, hiding in the base of the plants during the day. Depending on the climate, the species typically overwinters as larvae, resuming development in the spring.
Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding damage manifests as irregular notches or complete defoliation of leaves. High population density leads to a significant loss of vegetative mass, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. This stress can result in stunted growth and reduced yields in fodder grasses and cereal crops.
Protection measures. Effective control involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping field margins clean from invasive grasses prevents the initial buildup of larvae. When scouting indicates that the economic injury level has been surpassed, targeted application of appropriate insecticides is recommended to suppress the population before significant damage occurs.
