Cofana

Cofana is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cicadellidae, order Hemiptera. These leafhoppers are recognized as significant pests that can inflict substantial damage on agricultural crops, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Within entomological classification, they are categorized under the subfamily Cicadellinae, characterized by their specialized mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking plant sap.

The pest targets a variety of plants, though it is most economically destructive to rice crops and various cereals. In addition to cultivated plants, these insects utilize numerous wild grasses as secondary hosts, which allows their populations to thrive even when primary crops are not available on the field throughout the entire growing season.

The biology of Cofana is heavily influenced by humidity and ambient temperatures. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adult insects are highly mobile and exhibit strong migratory behavior, allowing them to rapidly infest new areas. Females typically lay eggs directly into leaf or stem tissues, which provides the offspring with immediate access to nutrition upon hatching and protection from environmental stress.
