Northern bobwhite

The genus Colinus belongs to the family Odontophoridae, order Galliformes. The most prominent species is the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). While often considered a game bird, in agricultural landscapes, these birds can act as pests by consuming planted seeds and young seedlings of various economic crops.

They predominantly affect cereals, oilseeds, and legumes. Maize, soybeans, and wheat are particularly vulnerable during the germination stage. The birds forage on the ground, excavating soil to reach seeds, which significantly reduces plant density and often necessitates costly reseeding efforts on affected field sections.

The biology of Colinus is characterized by terrestrial nesting and foraging in coveys during the autumn and winter. They occupy diverse habitats, including agricultural fields and fence rows. Their reliance on grain and weed seeds makes agricultural fields an attractive food source, especially when natural food supplies are scarce or when habitats are fragmented.

Damage is characterized by distinct patterns of missing plants and small shallow holes in the soil surface. The economic impact is highest during the early stages of plant development when the young crop is most vulnerable to biomass loss. Intense grazing can stunt growth or lead to total crop failure on specific patches of the field.

To mitigate the impact of northern bobwhite on agricultural yields, growers should implement a multi-faceted management strategy. Effective protection involves both mechanical and behavioral deterrents. Recommended practices include:
