Mountain leafhopper

The mountain leafhopper (Colladonus montanus) is an insect species within the family Cicadellidae, belonging to the order Hemiptera. Although these insects are small in size, they cause significant economic loss in farming regions. They are primarily known for their ability to transmit phytoplasmas and plant viruses, which are responsible for debilitating plant diseases that cannot be cured once established.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly members of the Solanaceae and Apiaceae families, such as tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots. By feeding on the plant sap, the leafhoppers extract essential nutrients. This mechanical damage, combined with the injection of salivary enzymes, weakens the plant and stunts its growth significantly.

The life cycle of Colladonus montanus is influenced by climate, with multiple generations possible during a single season in warmer climates. Eggs are usually laid in the plant tissue or weeds. The nymphs go through several molting stages, growing larger and more mobile until they reach the adult stage, at which point they become highly efficient at spreading diseases between fields.

Damage symptoms often include yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis), curling of foliage, and stunted internodes. The virus transmission often leads to a condition known as "curly top" or similar yellows diseases. Infected crops experience a total collapse of yield quality, as plants stop producing fruit or produce deformed, unmarketable produce.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial to minimize losses:

• Regular field scouting and the use of yellow sticky cards to detect migrations.
• Elimination of alternative host weeds in and around the crop field.
• Application of systemic insecticides at the early stage of infestation.
• Use of row covers for smaller vegetable patches to prevent colonization.
