Kew scale

The Kew scale (Colobopyga kewensis) is an insect species belonging to the family Halimococcidae. This specialized pest primarily infests ornamental and indoor plants, particularly those kept in botanical gardens or greenhouses. Due to its cryptic appearance, it often remains unnoticed until a significant infestation has already established itself on the host plant.

This pest is known for primarily attacking palm trees and other exotic flora. The insects feed by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues, extracting sap. This constant drainage of nutrients significantly weakens the plant, making it susceptible to secondary infections and physiological stress.

The life cycle of the Kew scale is characterized by high site fidelity in females, which develop protective wax-like coverings. The most critical phase for spreading the infestation is the crawler stage, where mobile nymphs move to new, healthy parts of the plant or onto adjacent foliage. Understanding this timing is essential for effective population control.

Symptoms of infestation include general yellowing, stunted growth, and distorted foliage development. Because the scale excretes honeydew during feeding, it often creates an environment conducive to the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaves in a black, powdery substance and further inhibits the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis.

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves or plant parts.
• Application of systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissue.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects.

Effective management requires a long-term strategy, as the waxy armor of the adult scale provides natural protection against contact insecticides. Pest control programs should focus on breaking the reproductive cycle through multiple treatments, combined with good greenhouse hygiene practices to ensure the long-term health of the plant collection.
