Colopha is a genus of aphids within the family Aphididae. These insects are known for their host-alternating life cycle, primarily associated with elm trees (Ulmus) as primary hosts and various herbaceous plants or grasses as secondary hosts. Their presence often goes unnoticed until visible symptoms appear on the primary host.

Taxonomically, Colopha belongs to the order Hemiptera. The biological cycle of this pest is complex, involving the production of distinct morphs that differ between the primary and secondary host plants. This adaptation allows them to maximize survival rates across different seasons and environmental conditions.

The primary damage occurs on elm trees, where the aphids induce the formation of characteristic leaf galls. These structures provide protection and nutrition for the colony. On secondary hosts, such as various grasses, the aphids colonize the root system, causing significant physiological stress to the plants without necessarily causing visible above-ground leaf damage.

The harmfulness of Colopha lies in the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency on trees and nutrient depletion on agricultural crops. Heavy infestations on elm trees can lead to leaf yellowing and premature defoliation. Chemical control is most effective in early spring when the fundatrices (stem mothers) begin their development on elm buds.
