Elm gall aphid

The elm gall aphid (Colopha compressa) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a specialized pest that is notorious for its ability to induce abnormal growths, or galls, on the leaves of its primary host plant, the elm tree (Ulmus species), significantly impacting the aesthetic and physiological state of the trees.

The host range of Colopha compressa is primarily centered on elm trees during the spring and early summer. However, the species exhibits a complex heteroecious life cycle, meaning it requires both woody plants (elms) and secondary host plants, typically grasses, where it spends a portion of its life cycle underground on the roots.

The biological cycle begins when overwintered eggs hatch as temperatures rise in the spring. The young aphids settle on the expanding foliage of the elm, causing the leaf tissue to swell and fold into a characteristic gall structure. These structures provide protection for the aphid colony as they feed and reproduce before winged forms eventually migrate to secondary hosts.

Damage is characterized by the presence of prominent, comb-like galls along the midrib of the leaves. While individual galls may seem harmless, heavy infestations cause severe leaf curling, premature necrosis, and substantial foliage loss. This defoliation reduces the tree's ability to photosynthesize, making it more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stress.

To effectively manage the elm gall aphid, arborists and gardeners should adopt a proactive management strategy:

• Apply systemic insecticides during the bud burst stage before the galls have fully formed and protected the insects.
• Practice sanitation by removing heavily infested leaves or shoots where possible to reduce the population.
• Ensure the trees are well-watered and fertilized to improve natural resistance.
• Conserve natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps in the surrounding landscape.
