Description
Systematic position. The genus Coloradoa belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These small sap-sucking insects are specialized herbivores that have co-evolved with various plant species, primarily within the Asteraceae family, making them significant pests in both decorative gardening and commercial floriculture.
Host plants. The primary targets for Coloradoa species are plants within the genus Chrysanthemum. These aphids are frequently encountered in greenhouse environments, where the constant availability of tender plant tissue and lack of winter dormancy allow the populations to persist and thrive throughout the entire year.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Coloradoa is characterized by high reproductive rates. During the growing season, aphids reproduce via parthenogenesis, with females giving birth to live nymphs.
