Description

The mugwort aphid (lat. Coloradoa absinthii) is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a strictly specialized pest that primarily inhabits plants of the genus Artemisia, demonstrating a high degree of co-evolution with its host plants.

This pest is primarily found on Artemisia absinthium (wormwood) and related species grown for medicinal or essential oil production. The aphids aggregate in dense colonies on the undersides of leaves and on young, succulent terminal shoots, where they exert strong pressure on the plant's metabolic processes.

The biological cycle of this aphid involves rapid reproduction through parthenogenesis during the favorable spring and summer months. The insects rely on the continuous supply of phloem sap, which they extract using their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts, significantly weakening the physiological state of the host plant.

Damage caused by the mugwort aphid includes severe leaf curling, stunted growth of stems, and yellowing (chlorosis) due to the loss of sap. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the market quality and chemical content of the medicinal crop.

Effective management requires integrated pest control measures. This includes maintaining field hygiene to prevent the buildup of pest reservoirs and the careful use of chemical interventions when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds. Natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, also play a significant role in keeping populations of this aphid in check.
