Orchid scale

Orchid scale (Conchaspis angraeci) belongs to the family Conchaspididae. It is a highly specialized sap-sucking pest primarily affecting tropical ornamental plants in greenhouses, botanical gardens, and indoor collections worldwide.

The primary hosts of this pest include various orchid species, particularly those in the Angraecum and Cattleya alliances. Due to its cryptic nature and ability to mimic plant tissues, it is often overlooked by growers until a significant infestation has already established on the pseudobulbs or leaves.

The life cycle consists of eggs laid beneath the female's conical, waxy test, followed by highly mobile crawler stages that disperse across the host plant. Once a suitable feeding site is located, the insects settle, lose mobility, and begin to secrete the protective covering that defines their adult morphology.

Infestation damage manifests as chlorotic spots, stunted growth, and general plant decline. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the aesthetic value of the orchids. Severe infestations can eventually lead to the necrosis of affected plant tissues.

• Regular inspection of the underside of leaves and base of pseudobulbs.
• Application of systemic insecticides that are translocated throughout the plant tissues.
• Mechanical removal using alcohol-dipped swabs for light infestations.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects under their protective scales.
• Implementation of strict quarantine protocols for any new plant introductions into the collection.
