The oat grass midge (Contarinia arrhenatheri) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various forage grasses, particularly Arrhenatherum elatius (tall oat-grass), where it causes damage to seed production systems.

The biology of the midge is closely tied to the flowering phenology of host grasses. Adult midges emerge during the grass blooming period, and females utilize their ovipositors to insert eggs into the developing florets. This behavior ensures that emerging larvae have immediate access to the essential parts of the seed head.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae feed internally on the developing ovary and reproductive tissues of the seed.
