Description
The garlic midge (Contarinia cuniculator) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is known to cause significant agricultural damage to various Allium species, particularly garlic, in temperate climates.
This pest exclusively targets garlic crops. The larvae feed on the internal tissues of the leaves and stems, significantly weakening the plant and causing a decline in both the overall crop yield and the quality of the harvested bulbs.
The biological cycle of the garlic midge is strictly seasonal. The insect overwinters as a pupa in the soil. Once temperatures rise in the spring, adult midges emerge, mate, and deposit their eggs within the succulent tissues of young garlic plants.
Damage caused by this pest is easily identified by the distortion and yellowing of the foliage. Infested tissues often become necrotic, and the internal cavities created by larvae provide entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to bulb rot.
Effective pest management relies on an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize crop rotation to break the pest's cycle, use chemical treatments during the peak flight of adults, and ensure that infested plant material is removed and destroyed immediately to prevent population buildup.
