Description
The beech gall midge (Contarinia fagi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This species is a specialized pest that specifically targets beech trees (Fagus). Its presence is often indicated by distinct physiological changes in the host plant's foliage, making it a subject of interest for both forest pathologists and nursery managers.
This pest primarily attacks the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). The damage is most severe on younger trees, where the reduction of healthy leaf surface can affect the tree's overall vigor. While usually not lethal to mature trees, heavy infestations can cause significant aesthetic damage and growth retardation in saplings.
The biology of Contarinia fagi is closely synchronized with the phenology of the beech tree. Adults emerge in spring when the buds are opening. Eggs are laid into the leaf tissues. The resulting larvae induce the plant to form a gall—a tumor-like structure that provides both food and protection for the developing larvae throughout the growing season.
The damage is clearly visible as numerous small, circular, or blister-like galls on the surface of the leaves. As the larvae grow, the galls may cause the leaf to deform or yellow prematurely. This feeding behavior diverts nutrients from the plant, weakening the leaves and making them more susceptible to secondary pathogens such as leaf-spot fungi.
Effective management begins with monitoring the adult flight period in the spring. In nursery settings, cultural practices such as removing infested leaf litter can help reduce the local population of overwintering pupae. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is generally reserved for high-value plantings where significant economic or decorative damage is anticipated.
