Fescue midge

The fescue midge (Contarinia festucae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is known to cause significant damage to the reproductive structures of grasses, particularly those grown for seed production, making it a critical concern for modern agronomy.

The primary host plants for this pest include species of the genus Festuca, with a strong preference for meadow fescue. The larvae are the main destructive stage, feeding directly on the developing ovaries within the florets, which prevents seed development and leads to widespread sterility of the inflorescences.

The lifecycle of the fescue midge is synchronized with the heading and flowering stages of its host grasses. Adult midges emerge from the soil in spring, coinciding with the development of the seed heads. After mating, females deposit eggs into the florets, and upon hatching, the larvae begin their damaging feeding process.

Damage caused by this midge is often characterized by the presence of empty or deformed florets. In heavily infested fields, the seed yield can drop drastically. Because the larvae are protected inside the floral parts, they are often overlooked until the harvest phase, when low seed quality becomes apparent.
