Description
The cotton flower midge (Contarinia gossypii) is a small insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This pest is a specialized phytophage whose lifecycle is closely linked to the reproductive organs of cotton plants, making it a significant challenge for cotton producers globally.
The primary host crop for this pest is the cotton plant (Gossypium). Adult midges lay their eggs inside developing flower buds. Because the larvae develop inside the bud tissue, the damage is often internal, making early detection by visual inspection on the field quite difficult for agronomists.
The life cycle of Contarinia gossypii consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the unopened buds. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the tender internal tissues, which disrupts the normal development of the flower. The speed of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and soil moisture levels.
The damage caused by this insect leads to bud shed, deformed ovaries, and premature drop of flowers. Heavy infestations significantly reduce the crop yield, as the damaged buds fail to produce cotton bolls. This results in direct economic losses and lower quality of the harvested cotton fiber in affected regions.
To protect crops from Contarinia gossypii, growers should implement the following strategies:
