Hop gall midge

The hop gall midge (Contarinia humuli) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a specific and significant pest of hop cultivation. Due to its size and nocturnal habits, infestations are often discovered only after significant damage has occurred to the reproductive structures of the host plant.

The primary host for this pest is the common hop, Humulus lupulus. The larvae of the midge specifically target the developing hop cones (strobiles). By feeding on the bracts and bracteoles, they disrupt the normal maturation process of the plant, which is critical for brewers who rely on the lupulin glands located within these structures.

The life cycle of the hop gall midge is synchronized with the vegetative stage of the hop plant. The species typically overwinters as larvae in the soil. During the spring and early summer, they pupate and emerge as adults. After mating, females deposit eggs into the developing flower buds. This rapid reproductive cycle allows populations to build up quickly during the peak growing season.

Damage is characterized by the distortion and browning of the hop cones. Infested cones fail to fill out properly and may undergo premature senescence. This damage not only reduces the overall weight of the harvest but also negatively affects the quality of the hop extract, leading to substantial financial losses for commercial hop producers worldwide.

Management of the hop gall midge requires an integrated approach:

• Implementation of field sanitation by removing crop residues and debris.
• Soil cultivation techniques during winter to disrupt overwintering sites.
• Use of pheromone or sticky traps to monitor adult flight patterns accurately.
• Application of selective insecticides timed specifically to target the egg-laying period.
• Maintaining healthy crop vigor to improve tolerance against pest pressure.
