The grape blossom midge (Contarinia johnsoni) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in viticulture, known for its specific impact on the reproductive organs of the grapevine, causing substantial economic losses in affected regions.

This pest specifically targets grapevines (Vitis species). The damage is concentrated on the inflorescences. By feeding on the internal tissues of the developing flower buds, the larvae interfere with the normal development of the berries, often leading to the complete loss of individual blossoms or entire clusters.

The life cycle of Contarinia johnsoni is closely linked to the phenological stages of the grapevine. The insect typically overwinters in the soil as larvae or pupae. In early spring, when the buds begin to swell and inflorescences emerge, the adult midges emerge to lay eggs directly into the unopened flower buds.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct and easily identifiable. Infested buds become swollen, deformed, and often exhibit a reddish or yellowish discoloration. Inside these modified buds, one or more tiny, legless larvae are present. If left unmanaged, the infestation leads to premature blossom drop and reduced crop yield.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Soil cultivation around the base of the vines can disturb overwintering stages, reducing the spring emergence. When chemical control is necessary, applications should be timed carefully to occur before the bloom period, ensuring that the insecticide reaches the pests before they are protected within the closed buds.
