The juniper gall midge (Contarinia juniperina) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This tiny insect is a specialized pest that targets various species of the Juniper genus, causing significant damage to the plant foliage and young shoots.
The primary host plants for this pest are decorative junipers commonly found in landscaping, public parks, and nurseries. The presence of the midge often goes unnoticed until visible symptoms of needle distortion and yellowing appear, by which time the infestation may be widespread.
The life cycle of the midge is closely tied to the plant's growth phases. Larvae overwinter in the soil or under fallen needles. In spring, adult midges emerge to lay eggs on fresh shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant tissue, inducing the formation of characteristic galls as they feed.
