Description
The ryegrass gall midge (Contarinia lolii) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a significant pest primarily known for affecting seed production in various perennial grass species, causing substantial economic losses in agricultural seed crops.
This insect specifically targets grass species such as Lolium (ryegrass) and other forage grasses. Because it is highly host-specific, the midge can build up large populations in fields repeatedly sown with the same grass species, making it a critical threat to specialized seed production farms.
The biological cycle of Contarinia lolii is closely tied to the growth stages of its host plants. The midge overwinters as larvae in the soil within protective cocoons. In the spring, adult midges emerge to coincide with the heading and flowering of the grasses, providing the larvae with the necessary food source in the form of developing ovaries.
Damage occurs when the larvae feed inside the spikelets, destroying the developing seeds. This leads to shriveled or empty grains, significantly reducing both the quantity and the germination capacity of the harvested seeds. If left unmanaged, the infestation can lead to widespread yield failure across affected plots.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Key practices include:

- deep plowing after harvest to bury and eliminate overwintering larvae;
