Bird's-foot trefoil gall midge

The bird's-foot trefoil gall midge (Contarinia loti) is a small insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a specific pest that targets the reproductive structures of legume crops, particularly bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus). In agricultural landscapes, this midge is considered an important factor in the reduction of seed production efficiency.

The host plant for this species is restricted primarily to bird's-foot trefoil. The pest focuses its activity on the budding stage, where female midges lay eggs inside the floral buds. This specialization ensures that the larvae have immediate access to the essential plant tissues, such as anthers and pistils, necessary for their development.

The life cycle of the gall midge is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The larvae overwinter in cocoons within the soil. Upon the arrival of warmer temperatures in the spring, the larvae pupate, and the emergence of adults coincides with the onset of the plant's budding phase. Depending on regional climatic conditions, multiple generations may occur within a single growing season.

The damage caused by C. loti is clearly visible through the deformation of the floral buds, which become swollen and dysfunctional. These galls prevent the flower from opening and developing properly. Inside, colonies of yellow or white legless larvae feed on the floral tissues, eventually leading to the death of the bud and significant flower drop, which drastically reduces potential seed yields.

Management strategies focus on minimizing population density through integrated approaches:

• Maintaining spatial isolation between agricultural fields and wild legume habitats.
• Utilizing deep autumn or spring plowing to disrupt the soil-dwelling overwintering stages.
