Spotted-wing gall midge
Contarinia maculipennis
Description
Systematic position. The spotted-wing gall midge (Contarinia maculipennis) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. These are minute flies, well-known in entomology for their larval stages that live within plant tissues, causing the formation of abnormal growths or galls.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest include various leguminous crops, such as beans, peas, and related plant species. By focusing on reproductive parts like buds and flowers, this insect can significantly disrupt the generative growth stages of its host plants.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Contarinia maculipennis involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the soft tissues of flower buds. After hatching, the larvae feed internally on plant fluids. Pupation typically occurs in the soil, although it can occasionally take place within the host plant, depending on specific environmental conditions and generations.
Damage characteristics and economic importance. The larvae cause severe damage to the buds and blossoms, leading to blossom drop and distorted fruit development. This direct destruction of the reproductive organs causes substantial yield losses, sometimes resulting in total crop failure in heavily infested fields. The presence of larvae also weakens the plant, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors.
Control measures. To manage this pest effectively, agronomists recommend a combination of practices:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants to break the pest lifecycle.
- Deep plowing and cultivation of soil post-harvest to disrupt the pupation environment.
- Application of approved insecticides during the peak period of adult emergence and egg-laying.
- Regular monitoring with yellow sticky traps or pheromone traps to time pesticide applications precisely.
