Description
The oat midge (Contarinia merceri) is a significant pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is specifically adapted to feed on cereal crops, posing a distinct threat to oat production in many agricultural regions where environmental conditions favor its life cycle.
The primary host for this pest is the oat plant (Avena sativa). The larvae feed on the developing florets and ovaries of the oat spikelets. This feeding activity disrupts the formation of grain, leading to severe grain loss, empty florets, and substantial reductions in total crop yield.
The life cycle of Contarinia merceri is closely linked to the phenology of the host plant. The midges emerge from the soil at the time the oat crop begins to head. After mating, females lay eggs inside the floral structures. Once the larvae complete their development, they drop to the soil, where they overwinter in cocoons until the following season.
Damage is typically characterized by stunted panicles and barren spikelets. Because the larvae remain sheltered within the glumes throughout their feeding stage, infestations are often not identified until damage to the crop is already irreversible, emphasizing the need for timely field scouting.
