The Douglas fir cone gall midge (Contarinia oregonensis) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This insect is a specialized pest that primarily targets the seed-producing structures of conifers, specifically the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).

The larvae feed specifically on the developing seeds and scales of the cones. This feeding activity disrupts the normal physiological development of the cone, which often results in severe economic losses for seed orchards where high-quality seeds are required for reforestation efforts.

The life cycle of Contarinia oregonensis is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. Adults emerge in the spring, coinciding with the period when young cones are receptive.
