The Douglas-fir needle gall midge (Contarinia pseudotsugae) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a specialized pest that affects coniferous trees, specifically targeting the needles of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga species) to create characteristic galls.

This insect is primarily associated with Douglas-fir stands and nursery stocks. It is considered a significant nuisance in managed plantations where the aesthetic value or health of the trees is a primary concern. The extent of damage is often correlated with regional climatic conditions during the spring.

The biological cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs on developing needles. Larvae hatch and burrow into the needle tissue, triggering the formation of a gall. They feed and develop inside this protective structure throughout the summer before dropping to the soil to overwinter.

Damage symptoms manifest as distinct green or yellow-brown swellings on the needles. As the larvae grow, the needle tissue often becomes distorted, leading to premature needle drop. Severe infestations result in significant defoliation, which stunts growth and reduces the tree's overall vigor and resistance to pathogens.
